Focusing Frames is an innovative process created by
Barbara Merkur that brings both focusing and art therapy
together. It has recently been introduced into the
International Focusing Community at a conference on
Focusing in Costa Rica where it was well received. There
is a writer of children’s stories who uses them as a
stimulus for his ideas, and various people have
indicated their enthusiasm, doing them regularly and
finding them a reliable self-therapy.
There have already been (and will continue to be)
several workshops offered in Toronto on Focusing Frames
through the Centre for Creating Meaning of which Barbara
is the director. It is taught through workshops or
privately, in person or even on the phone.
Training is offered in the centre for doing Focusing
Frames with others, in two full day workshops both at a
beginner level and at a more advanced level. People who
use them professionally with their clients, students,
etc. can take an additional workshop to learn how to
teach them and use them, followed up by some practical
work.
They ground people in the here and now of their
experience; help people see what it is that is upsetting
to them and offer ways of problem solving around that;
they help people begin to move forward in their lives
past the areas in which they feel stuck; and they get
people in touch with their creativity. People come to
appreciate how they bring resiliency and stability into
their lives promoting the kind of change that is
self-enhancing.
