Focusing:
A person can be guided by a focusing teacher/therapist,
can do it on her/his own once the steps are taught to
them, or can engage in interactive focusing with a
partner. Each step in focusing brings one closer to
wholeness, a state in which the mind and body are
working together more efficiently. It opens up and
develops a dialogue between one's inner wisdom and the
experiences a person internalizes. This helps a person
come more and more to live a life that feels right for
them so that they can move in the direction of their
potential.
Focusing: a deep listening
that brings therapeutic change
So much of the time we
live our life with just empty words or thoughts that don’t
really capture the essence of what we are experiencing.
If we continue to use such words and live in a world of
just our abstract thoughts, we are only always half
experiencing or half living. In fact, we give too much
power to the word and become, as a result, lazy and
apathetic. We move our bodies through our ’will’ but
we are not IN our bodies. Eventually what happens is we
become distant from ourselves and live in a world where
we feel rather empty and disconnected. When I teach
people focusing, I am teaching them how to access their
‘Self’ behind all of their words, so that they can
carry the self with them and really connect with what is
going on inside them. It is a way of bringing life to
every moment and a way to keep people moving forward in
their interaction with the world, instead of falling
behind with doubts, fears, and a sense of being
alienated. It truly helps you return to the here-and-now
of your experience and gives you a sense of empowerment.
This is what intuition is all about, bringing your gut
feelings to every situation. The difference between
being in your intellect and living from your whole
bodily organism is the difference between empty words
and felt senses, between being removed from experience
and being right in the moment of the experience. When we
bring our self along with us, it is our inner wisdom we
are taking with us, the part of us that can make choices
that reflect who we truly are.
